고려청자 그릇
Kim, the last king of late Goryeo [고려], was known for his frugality and care for the people. He allegedly owned wooden bowls and plates, perfecting an already refined era of aesthetic ceramic ware.
>The types of bowls and plates used during that time period were probably typical of those found during other dynasties like Joseon or Ming. But few pieces of Goryeo ware remain. One of the most iconic and impressive examples of Goryeo ceramics is the Goryeo cheongja [고려청자] bowl.
>The Goryeo cheongja bowl is perhaps the most recognizable and famous piece of Goryeo pottery. It was a large bowl, usually 25cm in diameter, that was primarily used for ritual purposes. It is characterized by its beautiful geometric and floral designs along with its red or reddish-own glaze.
>The glaze is made of lead and iron, which is why it has a reddish hue. This unique glaze is also evidence of the advanced age of Goryeo pottery. Even though lead-glazing was introduced with the Goryeo dynasty, techniques and methods for making lead glazes could only have evolved over time. This means that the process for achieving this particular shade of glaze took time, skill and effort to develop.
>The ceramic vessels of the Goryeo dynasty are some of the most beautiful examples of pottery from that era. Cheongja bowls were no exception. They were often made of porcelain clays, which produce a fine and even texture. The surface is usually highly polished and sometimes decorated with sweeping flowers, vines and leaves in different colors, giving the bowl a viant and energetic atmospheric design.
>These cheongja bowls, especially those of the early Goryeo dynasty, represent the beauty of their time. The natural beauty, the simplicity and the elegance of these bowls were the inspiration for later centuries of Korean potters.
>The Goryeo cheongja bowl has been highly revered throughout history. Many of these bowls were created with meticulous care and attention to detail. They symbolize the wealth and power of Goryeo, but also their appreciation and respect for art and beauty. Today, they are highly sought after in the international art market and serve as a reminder of Korea’s past.
