The Sureum Pure Bowl
The Sureum Pure Bowl is a traditional Korean ceramic vessel of beauty and significance. The traditional Korean process of making a Sureum Pure Bowl involves an immense amount of skill and painstaking effort by the potter. After careful selection of the appropriate clay and grain size, the clay is mixed and pounded until it becomes malleable. Over 30 different operations follow over the next three phases: forming, drying and firing. Many details go into each phase to ensure the finished product is of the highest quality.
Forming involves shaping the clay into the desired shape and size of the bowl. This is a particularly delicate operation since it involves stretching the clay along the side of the bowl, sometimes as much as 4 cm, and the right consistency of the clay is essential to ensure the bowl can withstand the pulling and still retain its shape.
Once the bowl has the desired shape, it is left to dry for up to 28 days, until it has reached a state of “bone dry”. The bowl is then sent to a kiln for firing. Depending on the desired effect, different temperatures are used and the bowl can remain in the kiln for up to two weeks. This is the final process which creates the finished product, a beautifully glazed Sureum Pure Bowl.
The manufacture of a Sureum Pure Bowl is a long and laborious process, but the end result is truly a work of art. The bowl's classic lines, coupled with its subtle curves and exquisite glaze, make it a timeless piece that will endure for generations.
