>Broken Bowl Repair
>Humans have used ceramic pottery since ancient times. We treasure these vessels because they can be used over and over. But these ever-useful pieces are often prone to eakage. Although the oken pieces of a favorite bowl can be disheartening, it is possible for the bowl to be repaired properly. The process of repairing a oken bowl can ing back its usefulness, charm and meaning.
>Preparing the Pieces
>All pieces of the oken bowl should be collected and inspected. Clean the pieces carefully, making sure to check the eak lines for dust, deis or leftover adhesive residue. In some cases, a soft toothush may be necessary to dislodge stubborn deis within the eak. The pieces must then be assembled back in their original or approximate position.
>Gluing
>Gluing is the quickest and easiest way to fix a oken bowl. A general-purpose glue for ceramics should be applied to the eak line(s) between each individual piece. A gentle pressing of the pieces together should be done for a few minutes to ensure a solid bond. Before allowing the glue to completely set, a small amount of water should be applied onto the eak to prevent too much adhesive from seeping into the bowl’s material.
>Reassembling the Pieces
>The edges of each eak should fit together as closely as possible. If the pieces don’t align easily, they can be cut or sanded to fit. A glue should be spread evenly onto the entire area of the jointed pieces, including a thin layer of adhesive along the entire length of the eak. Excess glue can be wiped away with a damp cloth.
>Reinforcing the Adhesive
>After the glue has dried, a tape-like material should be applied over the eak. This reinforces the adhesive and prevents the pieces from shifting. Such materials include fieglass mesh, muslin bandages and even pieces of plain cloth. When using cloth, it should be placed between two sheets of waxed paper first, then soaked with a glue-water mixture. This way, glue gets forced into every part of the cloth, and the paper helps keep it visibly in place.
>Clamping
>If a simple glue and cloth method isn’t sufficient to hold the pieces of the oken bowl in their original surrounding, clamps can be used instead. For massive eaks, one or more pieces of strong cardboard should be placed between the oken parts. Then the pieces should be clamped tightly, allowing them to remain in the same position until the glue dries.
>Filling Gaps
>When the eak is still visible after gluing and clamping, a plastic filler should be used. This material shortens the curing time. If some of these fillers are available in powder form, they should first be mixed with a few drops of water to make a paste. Then, the paste should be deeply worked into the crack and wiped off with a damp cloth.
>Polishing
>Once the bowl has been successfully reassembled, it should be lightly polished, but only if necessary. A paste of bicarbonate, water and a few drops of vinegar should be rubbed onto the bowl for a shiny edy without damaging the porous material. Special polishers specifically made for ceramics can also be used.
>These steps can help restore a beloved bowl to its former glory. With a bit of elbow grease, patience and attention to detail, a oken bowl can be repaired quite successfully. The important thing is to remember that the ceramic material isn’t indestructible. The less it's handled, the less likely pieces will be oken.
