Download and read online Energy Law and the Environment in PDF and EPUB Unsustainable practices worldwide in energy production and consumption have led to a plethora of environmental problems. Until recently environmental law largely overlooked the relevance of energy production and consumption; energy was seen to be of little significance to the advancement of sustainable development. This has changed since 2000 with the global concern attached to climate change, the publication by the United Nations of the World Energy Assessment and the detailed consideration given to this issue at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. Australia has been seen to be lagging behind the other major industrialised nations of the world in addressing sustainable energy issues. This book was first published in 2006.
Download and read online Guidebook on Promotion of Sustainable Energy Consumption in PDF and EPUB The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) secretariat has on various occasions conducted consultations with non-governmental organizations (NGO) and in particular with consumer organizations, on effective approaches and concepts regarding consumer information for the promotion of energy efficiency and sustainable energy use. This publication presents outcomes and recommendations on these discussions that can serve as guidelines for NGOs. The publication covers three main areas, first, an introductory overview of the promotion of sustainable energy consumption in the residential sector of the region. The second part presents background information on essential legal, technical and policy aspects of campaigning for energy efficiency. And the final part, aims at facilitating the exchange of information on best practices and presents five institutional profiles of selected energy efficiency promotion campaigns.

Download and read online Solar Energy Applications in the Tropics in PDF and EPUB Renewable energy sources such as solar energy were advocated even before the energy crisis in 1973. Subsequent development in solar energy has been remarkable. Indeed it has been one of the most studied and researched topics in recent years. Much of the technology in the utilization of solar energy has been associated with housing and industrial applications, and, to a smaller extent, with commercial use. The nature of the utilization has been related to the philosophy of independence or autonomy in that each housing or industrial unit is made self-sufficient by the installation of solar energy equipment. The general aim of the development of solar energy has been to substitute existing energy sources by solar energy especially among the developed countries in the temperate regions. In developing countries, the application of solar technology has been more acceptable in rural areas where conventional infrastructure is under developed. A different direction is necessary for the development of solar energy in urban areas. Buildings are inter-related, and have been dependent on the conventional infrastructure. The consumption of energy is many times more than that in the rural areas. A new approach to urban development must be generated, and studies should be made on the feasibility and viability of using solar energy for urban settlements.
