Download and read online The Microgrid Revolution Business Strategies for Next Generation Electricity in PDF and EPUB What kinds (according to U.S. News & World Report) of clean electricity initiatives—ones that make sense on public policy and business strategy levels—could overcome the hurdles in shifting away from the entrenched electricity and petroleum-based transport industries in the United States? This book explores the tremendous opportunities of the new electricity revolution that looks to threaten the century-old business models of our existing power production infrastructure. • Synthesizes seemingly disparate concepts from the telecom and electricity industries with business strategy and policy and regulatory issues, allowing readers to see the tremendous opportunity at hand in clean electricity technologies • Describes a novel network topology for a next-generation electricity grid • Provides unique insights from the perspective of a chemical engineer who is also a faculty member of a business school and has served as a corporate strategy executive in the telecom industry
Download and read online Renewable Energy and Utility Regulation in PDF and EPUB This report summarizes the results of a joint project on renewable energy of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the US DOE. NARUC'S Task Force on Renewable Energy conducted a review of the current state of renewable energy technologies to evaluate their potential and extract key policy lessons from experience already gained in deployment of these technologies in numerous states. The main focus of this effort has been to clarify how utility regulators affect the development of renewable energy resources. The goal of the project was twofold: (1) identify the factors that have led to success or failure or renewable energy technologies in various energy markets, and (2) to develop an agenda on renewable energy and utility regulation for NARUC and the DOE. This report consists of three sections: renewable energy contributions, costs and potential; factors affecting development of renewable energy resources; and a renewable energy agenda for NARUC.

It includes revised chapters from the first edition as well as new chapters. Lays out the key issues around the integration of renewables into power grids and markets, from the intricacies of operational and planning considerations to supporting regulatory and policy frameworks. Provides updated global case studies that highlight the challenges of renewables integration and present field-tested solutions and new Forewords from Europe, United Arab Emirates, and United States. Illustrates technologies to support the management of variability, uncertainty, and flexibility in power grids.
Download and read online Understanding Electric Utilities and De Regulation in PDF and EPUB Power interruptions of the scale of the North American Blackout of 2003 are rare, but they still loom as a possibility. Will the aging infrastructure fail because deregulated monopolies have no financial incentives to upgrade? Is centralized planning becoming subordinate to market forces? Understanding Electric Utilities and De-Regulation, Second Edition provides an updated, non-technical description that sheds light on the nature of the industry and the issues involved in its transition away from a regulated environment. The book begins by broadly surveying the industry, from a regulated utility structure to the major concepts of de-regulation to the history of electricity, the technical aspects, and the business of power. Then, the authors delve into the technologies and functions on which the industry operates; the many ways that power is used; and the various means of power generation, including central generating stations, renewable energy, and single-household size generators. The authors then devote considerable attention to the details of regulation and de-regulation. To conclude, one new chapter examines aging infrastructures and reliability of service, while another explores the causes of blackouts and how they can be prevented. Based on the authors' extensive experience, Understanding Electric Utilities and De-Regulation, Second Edition offers an up-to-date perspective on the major issues impacting the daily operations as well as the long-term future of the electric utilities industry.
Download and read online Renewable Energy Law and Policy in PDF and EPUB Renewable Energy Law and Policy covers the aspects of most renewable energy deals, including issues pertaining to structuring, real estate, finance, land use, contracts, environmental, corporate, tax, and securities law. As this nascent industry matures, and technology makes it increasingly more efficient to create electricity from the sun, wind, and geothermal resources, lawyers have begun seeing an increase in questions from landowners, project developers and non-renewable energy producers that are looking to grow in, or break into, the renewable energy sector. Legislators have also taken notice of the unprecedented potential and real growth over the last decade. This book helps practitioners, students, and laypeople navigate the complex and ever changing landscape of this new area of law. It was written to help the reader deal with this evolving reality by explaining the dynamics of the industry and the existing and developing regulatory and competitive environment. Among the important areas addressed are the following: • Legal and policy issues that impact the development, implementation and commercialization of renewable energy projects. • Structuring, land use, siting, and finance issues encountered by developers of renewable energy projects. • Investing in renewable energy projects. • Renewable energy development in other countries. • Building a renewable energy project. • Selling renewable energy. • Tips for drafting and negotiating key renewable energy documents
Download and read online The Politics of Public Utility Regulation in PDF and EPUB The Politics of Public Utility Regulation focuses on the important and increasingly controversial issues of utility regulation by combining a sophisticated understanding of these issues with a rigorous examination of various regulatory arrangements across the American states. It draws on interviews with participants in twelve states: public utility commissioners, commission staff members, utility company executives, governmental consumer advocates, and citizen activists. In addition to offering an up-to-date, comprehensive survey of regulatory politics at the state level, Gormley makes specific proposals for regulatory reform and emphasizes the importance (and difficulty) of assuring both expertise and accountability. Students of politics and public policy will find the state-level approach useful in examining the strategies of the “New Federalism” that transfer more and more formerly federal responsibilities to the states.
Download and read online Advances in Solar Energy in PDF and EPUB In Volume 6 of the Advances in Solar Energy we have specifically targeted for a review the rich experience of the Power Utilities. Their hands-on experience in a large variety of means to employ solar energy conversion and to evaluate the technical and economical feasibilities is of great importance to their future use. In designing the lay-out for this volume, we wanted to collect all relevant information, including success and failures and wanted to emphasize the lessons learned from each type of experiment. The publication of such a review now has the advantage of a settled experience in the first phase of solar involvement of the utility industry with a large amount of data analyzed. We are confident that this information will be of great value to direct the future development of the solar energy mix within this industry. We have added to this set of reviews three articles which deal with the most promising high-technology part of solar energy conversion using exclusively solid state devices: solar cells. The development over the last two decades from barely 10% to now in excess of 30% conversion efficiency is breathtaking. In addition, the feasibility of economic midrange efficient thin-film technology holds the promise of opening large sc ale markets in the near future. This field will enter head-on competition for large power generation with more conventional technology.
